Humble as the Ocean, a Universe in Blue Painting

Written By: Shahsultan (Sofia)

This painting is dedicated to the ocean and its humbleness, and to my brother Daniel (Danny), who carries the spirit of humility just like the ocean. This piece was actually one of my first paintings, and it is very near and dear to me. When I was starting out, I had a strong vision for what I wanted to create. I bought all the supplies and worked for hours, wanting everything to be perfect. But as I was painting, the vision I had in my mind wasn’t coming through on the canvas. It felt like a disaster, and at one point, I walked away from it frustrated and let it dry overnight.

The next day, the security guard saw it and told me it was beautiful—unlike anything he’d ever seen before. When I showed it to my brother, he told me, “Shah, you’ve done a wonderful job. Look at it closely—it looks like the ocean, and you’ve captured its true essence. It’s not a disaster, it’s a masterpiece.” I was surprised and asked if he really thought it was that good. He assured me that even if you’re just starting out and things don’t go as planned, you should trust in yourself and not chase perfection—just follow your instinct and you’ll create great things.

His words touched me deeply. I displayed the painting in the office to see what others thought, and to my surprise, the “disaster” I saw was actually quite beautiful in everyone else’s eyes. Their positive feedback, along with my brother’s encouragement, inspired me to keep going and begin a new chapter with my next painting.

This painting offers an in-depth view of the oceanic universe and its true beauty. It serves as a micro-macro lens from an aerial perspective of the ocean. The fluid, marbled movement in the painting represents the ebb and flow of life. Just as water cannot be easily contained, the swirling patterns symbolize surrender to nature and the humble acceptance that we are part of a much greater, ever-moving force. By omitting a traditional horizon line, the painting symbolizes boundlessness, suggesting that the depths of the soul are as vast and unexplored as the deepest trench or the furthest reaches of space.

The small bursts of gold scattered throughout the blue represent moments of clarity or divinity within the mundane. These are the pearls of the ocean or the stars in the night sky, showing that even in the vast unknown, there is light and value to be found. The deep burgundy flecks introduce a grounded, human element—a reminder of the heart, the blood, or the earth, symbolizing the raw, humble reality of being alive and feeling. The streaks of white foam represent the ephemeral, fleeting nature of thoughts and moments that emerge from the deep, exist for a second, and then dissolve back into the blue.

The power of lowliness is a core lesson of the ocean. In philosophy, the ocean’s humility comes from its position—it stays at the lowest point and naturally receives water from every river and stream. To be humble as the ocean means to lower your ego so you can receive wisdom, stories, and energy from everyone around you.

The ocean is a mirror for life. In a world that often values the loudest voice, the ocean reminds us that silence is a reservoir of strength. While waves may crash on the surface, the depths remain unmoved. Being humble today means having that bone-deep stability—knowing who you are so well you don’t need to prove anything to the world.

If I’ve learned anything about being humble, it’s from my brother Danny. He’s my role model for humility. He taught me always to learn, to never have ego, and to remain open to new things. Growing up without a father and watching my mom do everything, my brother was like a dad to me. He always knew I had a calling for art and would give me his markers or crayons, pretending not to want them, but when I used them to create, he’d look at me with proud, smiling eyes. He’s a man of few words, but when he speaks, it’s meaningful. It’s an honor to be both like his daughter and his sister—he’s my mentor, and I’m grateful for all he taught me. He never seeks credit for anything—that’s just how humble he is. He’s like a living Greek philosopher with a life of simplicity, humbleness, and contentment.

The ocean’s humble plankton produce 50–80% of the Earth’s oxygen, quietly sustaining the planet without seeking credit. Just as a glass must be placed below a pitcher to be filled, a soul must be humble to receive divine grace. Humility clears away the darkness of selfishness so the soul can be transformed by something greater. In today’s world of self-promotion, the ocean teaches that real strength is quiet.

Resilience matters more than rigidity. Arrogance is like a tall tree easily uprooted in a storm, but humility is like grass or water itself, bending and surviving even the fiercest winds. The ocean, the most powerful force on Earth, spends its existence serving and sustaining all life without seeking recognition.

So, let’s embrace humbleness as our core moral value and not let ego take over. Let’s be like the humble, powerful ocean and see how the divine blesses us in every aspect of life, for divine loves nothing more than one who lives humbly and without pride.

Let’s welcome each day not with pride in our past, but with humility in our present, for a bright and delightful future for all.

Moral of the story: Humility is the quiet strength that opens us to grace, wisdom, and the beauty of life—be humble like the ocean and you will find your true power.

If you love the oceans and beaches, this painting is for you. If you believe in being humble as the ocean, this painting is for you. If you’re transforming from pride to humility, let this painting be your milestone—a reminder that divine loves when we choose humility, and is always merciful to those who do.
